Outreach Volunteer of the Year (VOTY) awards recognize the immeasurable efforts made by ACS local section and international chapter volunteers who conduct outreach and teach the public about chemistry. ACS presents awardees with a small gift and a certificate during a meeting or event. The awardees are also recognized at the annual ChemLuminary Awards, on social media, and in a special article in C&EN. Find out more here!
Jerry Putterman has been a dedicated member of the New Haven Local Section since 1960, when he began as a graduate student in biochemistry at Yale. After rejoining the section in 1982, Jerry has been an active contributor in numerous capacities, including serving as Councilor, Alternate Councilor, Chair of the Nominating Committee, and member of the Selection Committee for the Kirkwood Award. He also co-chaired the Awards Committee for NERM 2013 and played a key role as a judge and organizer for the Section’s award at the New Haven Science Fair.
This year, Jerry steps down from his position as Councilor, marking the conclusion of an extraordinary 60 years of service to the ACS.
Jane was recognized for her exceptional efforts in transforming our Chemists Celebrate Earth Week (CCEW) and National Chemistry Week (NCW) events into impactful and dynamic experiences. Through her leadership, these events have seen unprecedented engagement and innovation.
In addition, Jane has been instrumental in spearheading an extraordinary number of outreach initiatives, fostering connections with schools, community groups, and organizations to promote the importance of chemistry in everyday life. Her dedication and vision have inspired countless individuals, making a lasting impact on our community and the visibility of our mission.
Olivier was honored for his unwavering dedication and passionate coordination of the Chemistry Olympiad. Year after year, he has demonstrated exceptional commitment to organizing and running this prestigious event, ensuring its success and impact on aspiring young chemists.
Through his tireless efforts and meticulous attention to detail, Olivier has created a supportive and challenging environment that consistently produces high-achieving students from our section. His mentorship and enthusiasm have not only elevated the performance of participants but have also inspired a deep appreciation for chemistry among the next generation of scientists.
